2026 Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. Yet, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are serious titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is also apparent elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the trend in gaming seems especially pronounced.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and sticky tongues enable a myriad of innovative control schemes.
A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be on the verge of a true amphibian entertainment revival.
