JP Morgan Mandates Biometric Data for Headquarters Access

The financial institution has notified employees moving into its state-of-the-art corporate base in NYC that they must submit their biological identifiers to gain entry the high-value building.

Move from Discretionary to Compulsory

The investment bank had initially envisioned for the enrollment of biometric data at its recently opened high-rise to be optional.

Yet, employees of the biggest American bank who have begun work at the main office since this summer have obtained communications stating that biometric access was now "required".

Understanding the Biometric System

Biometric access demands personnel to provide their hand geometry to pass through access portals in the main floor in place of scanning their access passes.

Headquarters Details

The corporate tower, which apparently cost $3bn to build, will eventually function as a workplace for 10,000 workers once it is entirely staffed later this year.

Protection Reasoning

JP Morgan opted not to respond but it is assumed that the implementation of biometric data for access is designed to make the building safer.

Exemption Provisions

There are exemptions for some employees who will continue to have the option to use a traditional pass for access, although the standards for who will use more conventional entry methods remains undefined.

Supporting Mobile Applications

In addition to the deployment of palm and eye scanners, the organization has also introduced the "JPMC Work" mobile app, which functions as a electronic pass and portal for worker amenities.

The platform enables employees to handle external entry, navigate building layouts of the facility and arrange in advance dining from the building's multiple on-site dining vendors.

Broader Safety Concerns

The introduction of stricter access protocols comes as business organizations, especially those with major presence in the city, look to strengthen protection following the shooting of the chief executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in summer.

The executive, the boss of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot not far from JP Morgan's offices.

Future Expansion Possibilities

It is unclear if the banking institution aims to introduce the biometric system for staff at its offices in other major financial centres, such as the UK capital.

Corporate Surveillance Context

The move comes during debate over the use of digital tools to track workers by their companies, including monitoring workplace presence.

Earlier this year, all the bank's employees on mixed remote-office plans were told they have to report to the workplace on a daily basis.

Leadership Viewpoint

The bank's chief executive, the financial executive, has referred to the company's new 60-storey headquarters as a "tangible expression" of the institution.

The executive, one of the global financial leaders, lately cautioned that the probability of the financial markets experiencing a decline was significantly higher than many market participants anticipated.
