The US Firm's Autonomous Cabs Coming Soon London Roads Starting 2026.
The US-based enterprise Waymo has declared that its autonomous taxis will be operational for use on London's thoroughfares beginning next year.
London Becomes Leading European City for Autonomous Ride-Hailing.
The UK capital will emerge as the inaugural European city to host an autonomous taxi service, akin to those currently familiar in multiple US cities and four other American urban centers using Waymo's cutting-edge technology.
Initial Testing Phase to Commence with Trained Operators.
Waymo confirmed that its vehicles are currently heading to London and will commence driving on the capital's streets in the near future with safety drivers in control.
The company – initially created as a derivative from Google's self-driving car program and belonging to the Alphabet family – explained it would expand activities and partner with the UK transport authorities and the city's mobility organization to secure the essential licenses to provide fully autonomous services by 2026.
Expanding Interest in Autonomous Mobility Across London.
Additional organizations, including Uber and the UK-based technology firm Wayve, have also declared their own intentions to test autonomous taxis in the city next year.
This follows the British government announcing it would speed up regulations enabling public testing to proceed before legislation allowing autonomous cars becomes law in full.
“I am thrilled that Waymo intends to introduce their services to London next year, under our proposed piloting scheme,” said the government minister, the secretary.
“Supporting the autonomous vehicle industry will increase available transport options while also creating work, investment, and opportunities to the UK. Cutting-edge funding like this will help us deliver our objective to be global pioneers in advanced innovation and spearhead economic growth.”
Full Rollout Expected After Regulatory Framework Takes Effect.
A broader rollout of driverless taxis is expected in the UK after the Automated Vehicles Act is fully implemented in the latter part of 2027.
Waymo's Established Ties in the UK and Internationally.
Waymo already has connections to Britain after establishing its inaugural European research base in Oxford in 2019.
It is also introducing services in Tokyo using JLR electric vehicles, marking its sole additional existing operation beyond the United States.
“Our experience shows how to responsibly scale fully autonomous ride-hailing, and we look forward to extend the positive impacts of our technology to the UK,” remarked Waymo's co-chief executive, noting that the technology was “improving road safety and travel more accessible”.
Demonstrated History in the US.
Waymo began its driverless taxis in 2020 and currently states it has served over 10 million riders in the US.
In spite of some troubling incidents, Waymo indicated that evidence revealed that vehicles operated by drivers were linked to crashes that injured walkers at a much higher rate than its driverless vehicles.
