'Those final few hours were brutal': British pair complete extraordinary voyage in Australia after paddling across Pacific Ocean

One more day. One more day up and down the pitiless slide. Another round of raw palms holding onto unyielding oars.

Yet after traversing 8,000+ sea miles at sea – an epic five-and-a-half-month journey through Pacific waters that included close encounters with whales, defective signaling devices and cocoa supply emergencies – the waters delivered a last obstacle.

Powerful 20-knot gusts approaching Cairns repeatedly forced their compact craft, their boat Velocity, from the terra firma that was now painfully near.

Supporters anticipated on shore as a planned midday arrival evolved into afternoon, subsequently 4pm, then dusk. Ultimately, at 6:42 PM, they arrived at the Cairns marina.

"Those final few hours were brutal," Rowe stated, at last on firm earth.

"Breezes were forcing us off course, and we genuinely believed we might fail. We found ourselves beyond the marked route and considered swimming the remaining distance. To at last reach our destination, after talking about it for so long, just feels incredible."

The Epic Journey Begins

The British pair – Rowe is 28 and Payne 25 – pushed off from Lima, Peru in early May (an earlier April effort was stopped by equipment malfunction).

Across nearly half a year on water, they averaged 50 nautical miles a day, paddling together in daylight, individual night shifts while her partner rested just a few hours in a confined sleeping area.

Endurance and Obstacles

Sustained by 400 kilograms of dehydrated meals, a seawater purification system and an integrated greens production unit, the duo depended upon a less-than-reliable solar system for only partial electrical requirements.

For much of their journey across the vast Pacific, they lacked directional instruments or beacon, turning them into a "ghost ship", nearly undetectable to passing ships.

The duo faced nine-meter waves, traversed marine highways and survived violent tempests that, periodically, disabled all electrical systems.

Record-Breaking Achievement

And they've kept rowing, one stroke after another, during intensely warm periods, under star-filled night skies.

They achieved an unprecedented feat as the pioneering women's team to paddle over the South Pacific, non-stop and unsupported.

Furthermore they gathered more than £86,000 (Australian $179,000) supporting Outward Bound.

Life Aboard

The pair did their best to keep in contact with the world beyond their small boat.

During the 140s of their journey, they announced a "sweet treat shortage" – reduced to their final two portions with over 1,000 miles remaining – but permitted themselves the luxury of unwrapping a portion to celebrate England's Red Roses triumph in global rugby competition.

Personal Reflections

Payne, hailing from inland Yorkshire, had not been at sea until she rowed the Atlantic solo in 2022 in a record time.

She has now mastered another ocean. However there were instances, she conceded, when failure seemed possible. Beginning on the sixth day, a path over the planet's biggest sea seemed unachievable.

"Our electrical systems were diminishing, the desalination tubes ruptured, however following multiple fixes, we accomplished a workaround and barely maintained progress with reduced energy throughout the remaining journey. Every time something went wrong, we merely made eye contact and went, 'naturally it happened!' Yet we continued forward."

"Jess made an exceptional crewmate. Our mutual dedication stood out, we problem-solved together, and we perpetually pursued common aims," she stated.

Rowe originates from Hampshire. Preceding her ocean conquest, she paddled the Atlantic, hiked England's South West Coast Path, climbed Mount Kenya and biked through Spain. Further adventures likely await.

"Our collaboration proved incredibly rewarding, and we're enthusiastically preparing additional journeys together as well. Another teammate wouldn't have worked."
